Ya’at’eeh (Hello), my name is Jordan Charlie. I am Diné (Navajo), my clans are Kinlichii’nii (maternal clan- Red House People) and Tse’Njikini (paternal clan- Cliff Dwelling People). I am currently a fourth-year pre-medical student attending the University of New Mexico graduating May 2022 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology with minor’s in Psychology and Chemistry.
My ultimate goal upon completion of both my undergraduate degree and medical school is to support Indigenous communities. Utilizing my academic knowledge by researching health disparities and health issues that are exhibited in Indigenous Populations. This will allow myself with the support of Indigenous Communities, and individuals to provide innovative ideas, solutions, and methods of resolving health care disparities and health related issues.
There are marked healthcare disparities among Native Americans and there are few Native American Health Professionals in academic research as well. In academic year 2020-2021, there were about 40 Native American students attending United States medical schools out of 22,000 total students. I plan to become a role model for my fellow underrepresented students of science and to serve as an advocate for the health of Native American people/communities. As I continue my education towards a career in healthcare, I devote myself towards advancing future generations and inspiring youth to pursue higher education. Where the overall goal is to give back to the community that has supported them throughout their endeavor.
